Over the past four years, the Redirection Program hasoperated at a lower cost than residential juveniledelinquency programs and has achieved betteroutcomes. Youth who successfully completed theRedirection Program were significantly less likely to besubsequently arrested for a felony or violent felony,adjudicated or convicted of any offense, or committedto a residential program or sentenced to prison aftertreatment than similar youth who successfullycompleted residential commitment. The RedirectionProgram has achieved $36.4 million in cost savings forthe state since it began four years ago due to its loweroperating costs compared to residential delinquencyprograms; the program has also achieved a costavoidance of $5.2 million in recommitment and prisoncosts due to reduced recidivism by its graduates. Giventhese outcomes, the Legislature may wish to considerexpanding the program.
