What is the purpose of the department?

The Department of Juvenile Justice's purpose is to increase public safety by reducing juvenile delinquency through effective prevention, intervention, and treatment services that strengthen families and turn around the lives of troubled youth.

What activities are performed by the department?

The department’s activities include the following.

  • Prevention Services provides voluntary prevention, intervention, and treatment services for youth. The services are designed to address specific needs and provide interventions for youth and their families to prevent crime and protect public safety.
  • Detention provides supervision for youth who are held pursuant to a court order, or who have been arrested for a violation of the law, when restrictive interim placement alternatives prior to adjudication and disposition are not appropriate.
  • Probation and Community Intervention promotes accountability using restorative sanctions, supervision, and treatment services to strengthen families and help support youth to become responsible citizens.
  • Residential Services supervises youth who have been adjudicated by the court and sent to state residential commitment programs.
