What is the purpose of the department?

The purpose of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation is to license and regulate businesses and professionals in the state.

What activities are performed by the department?

The department's activities include the following. 

  • Division of Alcoholic Beverage and Tobacco issues licenses and permits that are required for any business or person to manufacture, import, export, store, distribute, or sell alcoholic beverages or products containing tobacco or nicotine.
  • Division of Athletic Commission licenses and regulates professional boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts.
  • Division of Certified Public Accounting regulates Certified Public Accountants and accounting firms.
  • Division of Florida Condominiums, Timeshares, and Mobile Homes provides consumer protection for Florida residents living in the communities the division regulates through education, complaint resolution, mediation and arbitration, and developer disclosure.
  • Division of Drug, Devices and Cosmetics safeguards the citizens of the state of Florida from injury due to the use of adulterated, contaminated, or misbranded drugs, drug ingredients, and cosmetics by administering the provisions of the Florida Drug and Cosmetic Act.
  • Division of Hotels and Restaurants licenses, inspects, and regulates public lodging and food service establishments. The division also licenses and regulates elevators, escalators, and other vertical conveyance devices.
  • Division of Professions licenses professionals, including architects, barbers, electrical contractors, geologists, and veterinarians.
  • Division of Real Estate regulates of real estate and appraisal licensees. The division is responsible for the examination, licensing, and regulation of individuals, corporations, real estate schools, and instructors.  
  • Division of Regulation, the enforcement authority for professional boards and programs, monitors professions and related businesses to ensure that the laws, rules, and standards set by Legislature and professional boards are followed.
